HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
MONDAY, OCTOBER 30. 'Vhe House met- at 11 li.nt. CONDOLENCE. Air Socklou ! moved; “Thai this House desires to place on record its high sense i>{ tlio distinguished services rendered to Now Zealand by the lato Mr Alfred Saunders; its appreciation of his valuable services a.s a member of the House idl Representatives, and its recognition of Ids work as a public man in Nelson and Canterbury, and as a contributor to the literatn.ro of tho colony, and tenders to tho members of his family its heart-felt sympathy in their irreparable /.oss.” Mr Sodclon spoko in high terms of tho character of tho deceased, and of his public and patriotic services. Tho lato Air Saunders was coutemporiry of Grey, Hull, Atkinson, Fox, Stout, Feathurston—all political giants of those days—and yet differed from ono and all, though in his latter days his political leanings were towards those held by Sir Robert Stout and tho lato Mr John Ballanco. Tho deceased was ever on tho Liberal side, or rather, on tho side of the people. A position in/ the Legislative Council was at all times at his command. The deceased was one of a school of whom very fow wore left —ono of tho connecting Units of tho bright past. Air Lewis, on behalf of the leader of tho Opposition, in seconding tho motion, said in the person of Air Saunders they had lost ono more of the ox-super-intendents of the provincial districts, ono of the very strong links which bound them to tho past. Several other members spoko in terms of appreciation of deceased’s services to the country. Tho motion was agreed to, and tho House then adjourned until 2.30 pan.
