AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
The near approach of the Australasian championship meeting lends much interest to the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting, which takes place on the Basin Reserve on Saturday next. Hector Burk (Hie Dunedin runner, who is the only colonial athlete who can claim to have defeated tho redoubtable Englishman, A. Shrubb, on equal terms, during the latter’s tour of the colonies), will compete against the Masterton runner, J. Bradbury, winner of the Mile Handicap at the Shrubb-Duffey gathering. F. E. Drake, of Canterbury, the New Zealand 220yds champion will run in tho sprint handicaps, and much interest will be taken iu the contests between him and tho Wellington College champion, young Goodbehore. The men chosen bv the Council of thd New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to represent New Zealand in Australia should be iu splendid form and If The track is in good condition, some exciting contests will take place. The committee has the arrangements well under way. A band of and afternoon tea on the lawn will fill up the intervals between tho events. Tho committee has decided to postpone the evening sports, which were to be held on Wednesday, until November 15th. It was resolved to extend the entries, and to add a 220yds maiden race, open to members who have not competed previous to this season.
