NATIVE LANDS

PHESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, May 31.; .The Assessment Court for Ivawhia County opened nt Otorohanga yesterday, Mr H. IV. Northcroft. S.M., presiding. The first proved to be a very important one. The objector, a Maori, was represented by Mr John Ormsby, who stated that he objected to the valuation for tho reason that the land in question being inalienable, in common vrtih all other Maori lands in this district, it had no selling value. Mr McGowan, representing the Valuation Department, combated Mr Ormsby's contention. He submitted that the question of restrictions imposed by the act was. quite outside the matter in dispute. The Court gave it as its opinion that the land, being under restrictions which made it inalienable, had no soiling value as laid down by the valuation of Lands Act, 1900. but suggested that the Supreme Court should be appealed to to decide this point for tho guidance of the Court.
