MESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, May 28. After a week of frost, a thaw set in this morning, and the day was beautifully fine. It is, however, freezing again to-night. CHRISTCHURCH, May 28. Mr H. J. Matthews. Government forester, accompanied by Mr W. W. Smith, of the Scenery Commission, leaves for Banks’- Peninsula on Monday to inspect spots suitable for scenery reserves. The Commission will follow later on. ’ The first annual public schools lawn tennis tournament, which was commenced last Saturday, was concluded to-day. The play of some of the ciiildren was unusually good, and compared favourably with the average play observed at adult tournaments, GISBORNE, May 27. Four mou were yesterday each fined .£1 for being in hotels on Sundays. For theft of tools, Daniel Clifford was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. Two sheepfarmers were each fined a nominal sura for exposing for sale sheep infected with lice. In each instance the sheep had been dipped at the proper time but the dip was Ineffective. A bankrupt examined yesterday attributed his failure to speculating on the totalisator bad debts, and losses with horses. He started a boardinghouse with £7 capital, and wound up with £205 10s unsecured liabilities, and assets practically nil. AUCKLAND, May 27. At a meeting of the Executive Council of the Auckland Provincial Employers’ Association to consider the programme adopted at the Conference of Trades and Labour Council delegates held in Wellington at Easter, most of the clauses were declared to be altogether unreasonable, an no warrantable interference with the rights and liberties of employers, and decidedly opposed to the 'welfare of the colony. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Percy Whitall, alias Dc Coursey, alias the Earl of Northesk, was committed for- trial on five charges of forging cheques for sums of £250, £4O. £l4O, £l, and one for £IOO. In each case witnesses stated that accused introduced himself to a business firm as Captain De Conrsey. ■ He. however, signed the cheques “Eednor," explaining that De Coursey was a family name. Cheques are alleged to have been forged amounting to £531. but only one—that for £l-ris said to have been cashed. WAIHI. May 27. Several cases of typhoid and scarlet fever have been lately reported here, two proving fatal. The local doctors are protesting against the action of the Borough Council in abolishing the rubbish cart service, and have sent a remonstrance to the District Health Officer,
