TRAM EXTENSIONS.
THE ORDERrIN-OOUNCIL "SIGNED AND DELIVERED. WORK TO COMMENCE WITHOUT DELAY. ■■ Tim Order-in-Council for the electric tramway extensions to Island Bay, Brooklyn, and Kilbimio was issued by. tho Government yesterday afternoon, and was received by the. Town Clerk before closing time last evening. The negotiations between tho Public Works Department and the City Council in connection with the Order have been conducted with promptitude on , both sides, and no delays that could be prevented have marked its progress through the various formal stages contingent upon the Government sanction to any extensive public work. Tho extensions consist of continuing the single track which now terminate? at Duppa street right out to Island Bay; from Kent terrace to Kilbirnio, via Lower Elizabeth street, Brougham, street. Queen • street, and through a tunnel to b© pierced through Mount. Victoria; and the continuation^of the Upper Willis street section to Brooklyn. The first work to be commenced will bo tho Island Bay extension, which will bo carried out by day labour, under the superintendence of the Oity Engineer. Contract tenders for the formation, draining, and ballasting work on the Brooklyn section, and for the piercing of tho Kilbirnio tunnel, will bo called for as soon as possible. All the nlatc" laying work is to to done by day labour. There is enough material on hand foul the construction of tho track and oven head equipment as far as Island Bay. All the rails on the, extensions are to bo laid on sleepers, and tenders close fo* the supply on the Bth prox.
