THE YORKSHIRE MATCH. FIRST INNINGS OF THE COLONIAL TEAM. ALL OUT FOR 322. LONDON* May 23.
Tire weather was dull and cold for the second day of the match between tho xVustralian Eleven and tho Yorkshire team. Tho wicket was hard, Th.re was an attendance of about two thousand when the game commenced. The Australians, who at tho close of yesterday’s play had lost eight wickets for 315 runs, resumed their innings, Kelly (3) and Cotter (3), tho two notout men, taking their places at tho wickets. In the first over, Cotter, after adding a single to his overnight score, was thrown out by Tunniclitte. Nino for 318. In tho second over Kelly, in trying to pull a ball from Haigh, gave Rmgroso an easy catch at mid-on, Howell remaining not out for 4. HOME TEAM BATTING. LONDON. May 23. Jackson and Grimshaw opened tho innings for Yorkshire to tho bowling of Cotter and Laver, Hopkins acting as a substitute for Darling, who injured his thumb. After three overs the score stood at 9, when play was stopped owing to tho bad light. Tho game was resumed after thirty minutes’ delay. The bowlers changed ends, and the change proved effective. Jackson, who played with great vigour and was in excellent form, was caught by Trumper easily at third man off Laver. lie made six fourers, including throe off one over from Cotter. His innings lasted fifty minutes. One for 68.
Without adding to his score of 24, Grimshaw was bowled in attempting to hit across one from Laver. Ho was sixty-five minutes at the wickets. Two for 85. Denton had made 17 when Tunnioliffe joined him. The former had made a lucky stand, knocking four fourers off Noble. At 31 Duff dismissed Denton with a brilliant running catoh, falling full length as he took the ball. When he had compiled 22 tho retiring batsman was missed in the slips by Cotter off Laver, and at 27 he was nearly caught by McLeod.. Three for 106. A hundred appeared on the board after eighty minutes’ play. At the luncheon adjournment three wickets were down (or 108—Tunnioliffe 7 and Hirst 1.
On resuming the weather was dull, the attendance having increased to twelve thousand. Cotter and Laver continued bowling. When he had put up 9, Hirst, who is very lame, was caught by Trumper at third man, off Laver. Pour for 137, of which total Tirfnicliffo’s contribution was 26. Play since the game resumed had been quiet. Before Rhodes, who was the next man, could make a start, ho was bowled by Cotter off his pad. Five for 138. Haigh also made a short stay, registering a single, and then being cleverly caught left hand by Cotter at point. The wicket was another to Laver’s credit. Six for 139. -
Myers looked like staying with Tunnicliffe, who was given a life at 33, Duff missing a running chance of a catch off Laver. Myers, however, fell, after scoring 8, to one of Laver’s slow “yorkers.” Seven for 164.
Tunnicliffe, who had made 52, let the newcomer, Hawke, do the run-getting for a time, and then tried his hand. From a hall from Laver, Tunnicliffe gave Hopkins an acceptable catch. Eight for 195.
tunnicliffe’s play was marked by judicious driving, his innings lasting an hour and fifty minutes. The remaining wickets only added a couple. Hawke, when he had made 15, was howled by Laver. Nine for 197.
Howell bagged Ringrose’s wicket, and the innings closed for 197. Following are the scores;— ■ YORKSHIRE.—First Innings.
AUSTRALIANS’ SECOND INNINGS. A POOR DISPLAY. GIX WICKETS FOR 59. LONDON, May 23. Tire Australians in their second innings had lost six wickets for 59 runs when slumps were drawn for the day. Trumper and Duff started the batting, Myers and Haigh bowling. Duff was caught'at second slip with the first ball of the second over. One for 1. Hill, the next man in, nearly monopolised the run-getting, adding 17 while Tninr er only registered 4. Hill was finally caught at the wickets. Two for 26. Noble joined Trumper, who was smartly caught at second slip by Rhodes. Trumper played very cautiously, scoring his 8 runs in thirty minutes. Three for 31. With Nohle and Gregory together,
Rhodes was put on to bowl, and ho dismissed both in his first over, taking Gregory’s off-stump (four for 42), and getting Noble leg-leforo (five for 43). Tlie Howell-Kelly partnership yielded 16 runs, all obtained by Howell, before the latter was bowled. Six for 59, which were obtained as the result of seventy minutes' play.
