ELECTRIC TRAMS.
PROTEST AGAINST SUNDAY WORK The following resolution passed by tho Lord’s Day Observance Committee, lias been forwarded to tho Maym ; ‘•That in the interests of tho community, bv preserving tho Sunday us a day of rest, the Lord’s Day Observance Committee respectfully urge upon t f lle City Council to discountenance, a* ai as possible, any further retraction of tbo Divine command by not increasing Srimday labour in respect of the ciec.iic tram service.” " Presumably this is the outcome of an announcement that, appeared in tno ; •Times * vestordav morning to tlio 01feet that, the work of erecting the trollv-wires in the Post Office triangle was put in hand on Sunday morning. The reason for this is easily explained. The wires had been already suspended, and ono of these was -Alive” as long as the Jcrvois quay section was working. It. was absolutely essential for the safety of tho public that this wire should not bo handled while tbo cni-reiit was on, so a start was made to lift .the wire immediately after the cars ceased running at midnight on Saturday. It was required that as much work as possible should bo dona before tho current was turned on at noon on Sunday, and the men were accordingly kept working up till that hour. Tlio Government Inspecting Engineer having decided that the two iron polos erected between tho double track and loop lines in tlio Post Office section aie unnecessary, these are to be removed, and instead of the trolly-wires being suspended from brackets attached to these .polos, they will be attached to wires stretched across the track between polos erected on tho seaward side of the double track and telegraph poles in Customhouse quay. Tho iron poles in question were only erected last week.
