During severe fighting towards the Liaoyang-Mukden ' railway the Japanese captured, at the point of the bayonet, a strongly-fortified position westward of Sikwantun. FORTIFICATIONS OF MUKDEN WEAK. (Received September 5, 10.44 p.m.) LONDON, September o. The fortifications at Mukden cannot be compared with those at Liaoyang, and it is not likely that the former place will be seriously defended. LOSSES OF HEAVY GUNS. DUE TO BAD ROADS. (Received September 5, 10.44 p.m.) LONDON, September 3. Tire recent losses of heavy guns suffered by the Russians aro attributed to muddy roads making it impossible to remove them.
