PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Council was held lash night. Present—The Mayor, Councillors Maefarlaue, Piper, Cook. Castle, \V. B. Nicholson, J. Wakeham, J. Bowles, IV. Hill and \Y. Kidd.

The Woollen Company wrote asking Hint the screens on its water main bo altered as they were too fine, and also that some air valves bo fixed on the uprises of tbo main and that it bo stayed against pressure so ns to avoid leaks in the .joints. In another letter the company asked for a plan of the complete water works.—The engineer slated ihat tbo air-valves would be provided on more important works, in connection with the scheme. Ho also suggested that the present screens at the intake bo given a fair trial.—With regard to staying the pipes, he informed tbo Council that tho work proceeded hand in baud with filling in the -trenches. It was also decided to take no action with regard Lo the application for a plan of lire waterworks.

Mr K. Jickoll, late engineer of tho borough, wrote, in answer to an inquiry of the Council's, that the pneumatic riveters used on the construction of the gasholder wore no saving at all ns tho riveting could be done more quickly by band.—A copy of this letter was forwarded to tiro borough solicitor in connection with the plaint of the Council against tho coutractoi-s for non-delivery ot material within contract time. The Treasury notified the Council that £X(WU for the construction of tho watersupply bad been placed to the Council’s oroUit.

In a further letter Mr Holtcn informed tlio Council that tno owners had been unable to purchase tne frontage necessary for tlie cross road Horn Huick street to Adelaide street, so mat tuoy woro unable to construct the read as nad been promised in his former letter.—The Council decided to insist on the construction of the cross road between Huick street aud Adelaide street.

Mr A. Huggius, contractor, wrote talcing exception to the action of me Borough Inspector in compelling aim to remove bricks from Huick street. Ho expressed himself very strongly on tho methods adopted generally by tho inspector.—The letter was referred to the inspector for a report. 'The Health Department notified the existence of a oaso of diptheiCa. Some discussion took place as to wno was responsible for tho disinfection of houses where infectious diseased exist. The engineer explained that the Health Department usually disinfected houses.' The clerk was instructed to ascertain who was responsible for disinfection. With reference to tho application of tho Kailway Detiartment for permission to close the road known as Kelly’s lane, the clerk reported that only 19ft 9j-in of tho load was tho property ot me council. Councillor Wakoham considered that the road oould not be closed if one ratepayer objected. The engineer explained that cae lano was part of the old coach load from the Wairarapa to Wellington. Councillor Castle advocated closing tho lane to avoid trouble aud annoyance in connection with a crossing. Too Mayor thought tho Government ought to ascertain tho feeling of ttio different owners of frontages to the. lane, seeing that iney had eonsnltod the Gear Company who owned frontage to the lane. Councillor Kidd moved that tho application of the Department for tho closing of tho road bo not entertained.— The motion was carried unanimously. Messrs Kryde and Son. applied for a 2ln gas service to their timber-yard at tho Lower Hutt for power purposes.—The application was granted.
