SUPREME COURT RETURNS'
Tho quarterly returns of business transacted by tho Supreme Court for th© Wellington judicial district for tha period ended 30tUi June show that the Court sat twelve days for tho disposal of criminal cases. Thoro were fifteen indictments. twenty-six convictions, three acquittals, and one nolle prosequi. I’iffceen persons who had pleaded guilty to charges in the Lower' Court were committed for sentence. On the civil side, sittings were held on fifty-five days, and forty-two writs were issued. There were nine trials by common jury, and 37 by a Judge alone"; seven judgments were entered, and five executions issued. There were fifty-five sittings in Chambers, eighty-nine motions were, dealt with, fifty summonses, twenty-three petitions, and 159 orders wer© made. Sittings were held in Banco on twentytwo days, dealing with sixteen motions, fourteen rules and orders, eight appeals from inferior Courts, and three special cases. There were ten sittings -in divorce, embracing fifteen petitions filed, eleven motions in Chambers, eleven orders, six. teen trials twelve decrees nisi and nine decrops absolute. There were fifty-five probates granted, and seventy-six administrations. Two hundred and seventy-six bills of sale, bailments of stock, etc., were registered, and throe powers of attorney. ’ Only one sitting wn s held in bank, rnptcy. Two debtors’ petitions were dealt with, three creditors* petitions, one debtor's summons, six discharges and seventy-one motions in Chambers. The foes received amounted to .£22 10s in bankruptcy, and .£BO9 6s 4d from other sources, -making ,£B3l 16s 4d*in all, as compared with .£685 Is 6d for the previous quarter, and .£BOB 13s 6d for the corresponding period last year.
