THE GALE OX THE AUSTRALIAN COAST. A FINE PIECE OF SEAMANSHIP. (Heceired June 2, 10.23 p.m.) SYDNEY, June' 2. The gale which lias been raging for the past week is still as fierce as over, and the sea is worse than for many yeara past. A coniplete block in shipping has been caused. The Ururoa, which left Newcastle on Saturday for Gisborne, is sheltering at Nelson’s Bay. Shipping is unable to enter Newcastle.

The four-masted barque Norma, from Brisbane, arrived off Newcastle this morning in distress. She dropped both anchors and appeared to bo holding well. A number of hugs ventured out to her assistance. One got a lino to the vessel and a pilot, went aboard from a lifeboat.' The line from the tug to the barque would not stand the strain and parted. It had been expected that the Nonna would make an effort, to stand off, but amid great excitement ashore the pilot, when the towline parted, stood in for the bar.

The vessel formed a magnificent spectacle as she raced forward under short canvas in the high rolling seas. Nearing the oyster bank she began to make leeway,- and the anchors were dropped, bringing her to a few hundred yards off the Northern breakwater. [The Nprmn is a -vessel of 1999 tons, commanded, by Captain McLaughlin. She arrived at Brisbane from Seattle (British Columbia) era April 21st. She was thou chartered to load coal at Newcastle for San Francisco on accouht of Earp Bros., Ltd.] SIGNS OF MORE MODERATE WEATHER. (Received June 3, 1.5 a.m.) • SYDNEY, June 2. The gale shows signs of moderating to-night.- _ . A four-masted schooner is reported in distress at Broken Bay at nightfall. The Aldeharan, from Hokianga, came in to-night with a big list. She had atempestuous time.
