riIESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND. May 23. It is reported from Matahura that a young farmer named David William Walker was found drowned yesterday m a well on his farm. It is supposed lie fell in accidentally. While the concert of the Liedertafei u as in progress last evening an accident nafo pened to one of the performers, Miss Maud Alexander, the well-known coutiaito, who formerly resided in Dunedin, “lie was retiring from the platform when sue missed her footing and was precipitated down a flight of steps. One of her kneecaps was fractured. It will he three or four months before Miss Alexander will he about again. Same years ago she had the misfortune to break the kneechp in her other leg. , ~ , . , At the inquest on the body of Fames Fee', found in the harbour yesterday, a verdict of found drowned was returned, it transpired that Fee was an inmate ol tho lunatic asylum at Dunedin for a short time some years ago. Tho local bodies in the Thames district complain of tho costly method in which licensing elections are conducted, and intend urging upon the Government the aclvisableness of adopting a cheaper method. Edwin Ferguson, aged 21, was found dead tlxis morning at the bottom oi a cliff at Denniston. He left a temperance lodge at 9 o’clock last night, and is sumposed to have missed his way, and ieii uo feet. His neck was broken. CHRISTCHURCH. May 29. An inquiry was held to-day into the death on May 23rd of. Mrs Amelia Malcolm. Deceased was on one of the trams in the Ferry road collision of April lltn, when she was much bruised and suffered, a severe nervous shock. Her condition brought her into such an anxious state that it was thought advisable bring on premature labour. The woman had puerperal and scarlet fever. One ot her nurses was now laid up with scarlet fever, but it was not clear wnethor the nurse had infected the deceased or vice versa. Dr Jennings said that death had been clue to "septicaemia, and the jury gave a verdict accordingly. An inquest was held to-day on Henry Heighten, found dead in tho Waimakam-i river yesterday. The jury returned a verdict of death from ag An elderly man named Duncan Fraser, a station cook, dropped dead iu the street this morning. Heart disease was the cause of death. DUNEDIN, May 29.
. A poll took place to-day of Caversham electors on the question of amalgamation with Dunedin. Owing to the miserable weather only 479 votes were recorded, out of 1543. The result was—For amalgamation, 172; against. 307. Teviot station of 24,500 acres freehold and 50,000 leasehold, with 33.000 sheep, has been acquired by a syndicate at about £50,000.
