CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYS

PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, May 29. At a meeting of the Tramway Board to-day a letter was received from.'the Public Works Department urging the Board to take into consideration the advisableness of using the double trolly system instead of the single trolly, on the grounds that it was equally efficient and would not interfere with the telegraph and telephone lines and! gas and water pipes. A copy of a letter from the Royal Geographical Society to the Government was also received. This pointed out that the cardinal aim of the present Antarctic expeditions will be frustrated if the magnet observations cannot bo compared with those taken in New Zealand at the same time. The scientific world is relying for most important information at Christchurch Observatory, and this would bo seriously affected by the proposed electric trams. The Board's engineer reported strongly against the double • trolly system. It was decided 1 to adopt his report and to forward it to'the Government.
