RETURNS FOR JANUARY,

The gold entered for export at tho different ports of tho colony for tho month of January was as follows, the quantity and value for the corresponding month of 1002 -being shown in parentheses : Auckland, 12,2620 z. valued at £42.994 (10,70402, valued at £37,949); Nelson, 7650 z, valued at £2907 (1940z r valued at £777); Westport, 2D850z, valued at £12.020 QlOOoz, valued at £■4440); GTcymoutli, 12,9040 z, valued at £51,591 (40970 z, valued at £10,398); Hokitika, 35610 z, valued at £14.244; Dunedin, 10.2930 z. valued at £65.925 (15.96G0Z. valued at £65,000) ; Invercargill, The total export for tho month was 48,7700 z, and the value £189,681, as against 32,8600 z, valued at £127,397 for tho corresponding month of 1902 ; that is an increase in quantity of 15,9100 z, and in value of £62,28-4.

An analysis of tho increase of £200.000 in tho export last year over that of the year before reveals tho steady advance of the*industry in Auckland, tho West Coast and Otago. In Auckland province there was an increase of £26,426, tho quantity of gold .showing an increase of 06150 z. In tho West Coast output there was an increase of 55100 z, valued at £21.266. In Otago tho increase was 38,1760 z, valued at £152,632.
