THE ENGLISHMEN.' MATCH AGAINST s MAELBOROUGH. J?KESS ASSOCIATION. BLENHEIM, January 23. Tho match between Lord Hawke’s eleven and twenty-two Marlborougn players commenced shortly before midday in drizzling rain, which lasted all day, and at tho later stages of the proceedings developed intq' showers, which interfered with the* play. The Englishmen won tho toss and went to tho wickets, eighteen of the local men going into tho field. Thfl conditions were to tho advantage of tho batsmen, tho hall being very greasy. Tho fielding of the local in on was characterised by many failures to take chances. This was particularly the case in regard to Dowson’s innings, the charmed life, of that player being a feature of the game. Ho gave fully eight respectable chances. At a meeting of tho Cricket Council to-night, a discussion took place with regard to the match to he played by tho Englishmen at Dunedin against a South Island team. Some of the delegates held the view that tho selection of the team should he left to the Otago committee. It was decided to ask Mr J. Fowko to select tho South Island team. Tho fixtures for Lord Hawke’s team havo been onoo more revised. Tho South Canterbury match lias been put forward a day, and will ho played on tho 25th and 2Gtli of February. Tho first New Zealand match 'has boon similarly put forward, and is to he player: on the 27th and _2Sth February and 2nd March, at Christchurch. The team will arrive in Wellington on tho 3rd March, and rest that day. instead of playing on the day of arrival, as prpviously arramrod. The second test match will take place in Wellington on 4th, sth and 6th March, the team leaving for Sydney on the afternoon cf the last day. A match played at Petono on Anniversary Day between a team from the Wellington Club and a team captained by Mr Thornton resulted in a win for tho latter by an innings and 73 runs. Tho scores were as follows:—Thornton's team—2o6 (Taylor 42 Spencer 23, Barber 19, Cate 17. Mc.vlinainin 17, Thompson 12). Wellington—lo 4 (Clavtorv 32 Ha.nify 25, Organ 171 and 29, Barber, eleven fox 52, and Brice, five for 34, had the best howling averages for the match.
