HE OF THE RUEFUL VISAGE.

As tho shades of evening fell, by the groat North road camo a stranger to tho city. Though clad in.good apparaJ, Ids stop was slow, and his face boro a look of so woeful a sadness, that, as ho passed along, tho burghers, ono and all, turned to gazo on him with deep pity. At length ho stopped, and leaned him wearily against a pillar. Ono who watched- him spake unto him and said, “What ails thee, friend? Why are'thou cast down?” Tho stranger heaved a deep sigh. “Alas, good sir,” ho said, “I am in sore despair. For many months have I boon sick unto death.
