Sir Freeman has been elected chair* man of the Horowhenua County Council. Sir R. Gjllett, of Kirikiriroa, Waikato, who passed at the last surveyors’ examination in Wellington, has received an appoim niciit in tho Public' Works Department of India in Burma. Recent callers at the Department, of Tourist and Health Resorts, Brandon street, were:—Messrs •). G. Tabutoau, Ashburton; Henry Redwood, Nelson; 0. 11. Owens, Marlborough; H. p. Staten, Canterbury. Sir George Dibbs was a passenger for Sydney by the mail steamer on Tuesday from Auckland. Ho has boon on a visit to New Zealand extending over some weeks. ’-The greater part' of his time was spent in the Hot Lakes district, where ho had boon ordered for his health, which has improved greatly.' Much sympathy is expressed with Mrs Philip Moeller on the death of her daughter, Mrs W. J. Poetz, w'hich occurred at Now York on the 25th October. Mrs Poetz, better known as Miss Leah Moeller, was a native of Wellington, and was very popular among a. largo ohcle of friends thrbugliout tho colony. She was married last year to Mr W. J. Poetz, of New York, auff left New Zealand shortly afterwards on a tour of the world. They had just arrived at their homo in New York, when Mrs Poqtz contracted typhoid fever, from which she died. The news was received by the San Francisco mail. Mrs Moeller has already received numerous tAlegrapis of condolence from all over New Zealand.
