The purchase of Puffs Farm at Moturoa, Taranaki, for flio purpose oi workmen’s homos, has been recommended hy the Land Purchase Board. Tho medical superintendent of the Porirua Asylum has received a donation of £1 Is from Mr W. H. Field, M.H.R., to he placed towards the asylum recreation fund.
At a meeting of the Wharf Employees’ Benefit Society, yesterday evening, n was resolved that the annual picnic and sports of tho society should be hen. on New Year's Day at Upper Hutt. Tho Guardian Assurance Company, for which Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co. are the agents in Wellington, is circulating a handsome wall calendar for 1003, a copy of which has reached this office.
Eighteen entries hayo been received' by tho Match Committee of tho Mastertou Bowling Club for tho Champion Singles, for which a handsome gold medal has been presented by tho “New Zealand Times” Company. At a meeting of the executive of the Wellington Bowing Association, hole, last evening, it was decided to hold the Wellington regatta on tho 21st February. Yesterday Eho Chief Justice, sitting in Chambers, had before him the impending divorce ease of Gammau v. Gamman, on a motion by the petitioner, Jessie Mary' Gamman, for trial of the. ease before a Judge alone. The respondent is George Albert Gamman, and divorce is sought on the .ground of his alleged adultery. ' ’ Tho parties were married at Woodville bn tho 22nd February, 1880. His Honor made the order sought for. The amount of costs to be paid as security was referred to the Registrar. Mr Skerrett appeared for the" petitioner, and Mr Dulziell for the respondent. The Chief Justice will this morning resume the hearing of tho case of Reid v the Bank of New South Wales and others, in which the plaintiffs, Win. Hepry Reid, of Mauaia, farmer, "and his wife, Margaret Mary Reid, seek to act aside certain conveyances executed wan James Randall Corrigan and .Samuel Sinclair Corrigan, with respect to their purchase of a farm near Hawera from them. : Plaintiffs- also claim that uie defendants ho ordered to repay the purchase money, £13,G12 6s, together with interest, also sums of £l2O expended in stamp duty and costs, and £l3B in im-provements;-to have an account taken of all losses incurred hy plaintiffs while in possession of tho said farm, or in- an alternative cause of action judgment for £6330. The case has already been partly hoard. As a mark of respect to the memory of tho late Mr John Golder, Inspector of Works for the Hutt County Council, .who died from injuries received hy a trap accident at Silvorstream on Tuesday, the Hutt Council adjourned its meeting for a time yesterday morning. Messrs Walker (chairman), Wakeham and Townsend spoke of the deceased as a conscientious officer who had never spared himself in carrying out his duties. His death has caused a blank which the Council will have a difficulty in filling. The County Clerk was directed to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Colder ana family. An inquest concerning Mr Golder’s death was held hy th District Coroner (Mr Jas. Ashcroft), - the Upper Hutt, yesterday. A verdict of accidental death was returned. The evidence showed that the horse which the deceased was driving took fright at an express which was being driven in the opposite direction. Mi- Whiteman who was also thrown out of the trap, is progressing favourably. The late Mr Golder was a prominent officer of tho Catholic Church at the Upper Hjitt, ana was organist for manv years.,
Mr Darcy Ford, of Willis street, has handed a cheque for 35s to tho tioasurcr of tho Klingamito Wreck Fund., Messrs Macdonald, Wilson and Co. will sell at their rooms at 11 o clock this morning a great novelty, and tho first of its kind imported into the city, namely, an electric upright grand piano, in liandsomo walnut frame. The instrument can bo played either by hand or driven electrically. It is on view and. exhibitions of its playing powers will be given. Mr Schwartz will receive tenders till the Sth prox. for tho erection of a house in Hawker street, and till tho 10th pros, for tho erection of a .warehouse and factory in Parish street. Tenders aro invited for the purchase of the liau Hau Creek Company’s dredge, claims, etc., particulars of which will be found in our advertising columns. Messrs Sidey, Mooch and Co. will sell, furniture, organ, piano,. etc., at their rooms to-morow afternoon.
