THE HOLIDAY.

Tho King’s Birthday being duo tomorrow (Sunday), it will bo celebrated by a holiday on Monday. Thero will be no public events celebrated in the city, so picnics to tho country will bo the order of tno day. At Trontham a novel and useful activo-scrvioo shooting and inarching competition will bo conducted by tho Wellington Rifle Battalion. Cricket enthusiasts will have tho choice of two matches—one between tho Hutt Valley representatives and a team of Wellington juniors (to bo played at tho Lower Hutt), the other a match between the past and present pupils of Wellington College, to be played on tho College, ground. Followers of “the sport of kings” may journey to Carterton, where (on tho Claroville racecourse) tho Taratahi-Cartorton Racing Club’s annual meeting will bo begun on Monday.

Tho country attractions by rail will include tjio meeting of tho Manawatu Amateur Athletic Club at Palmerston North, where a number of Wellington athletes will compote. Tho annual gathering of the Horowheuua Athletic Club will bo hold afc Levin. Tho sports ground is at Wercroa Park, close to tho Levin Railway .Station. One event on tho programme will bo a wood-cutting competition, in which several wellknown axemen aro engaged. Tho second annual meeting of the Foxtou Athletic Club will bo hold at Victoria Park. In all events largo fields aro engaged, including many of the best athletes in tho island. For tho convenience of Wellington visitors and competitors a drag will moot tho Manawatu train at Shannon, arriving at Foxton at noon and returning to Shannon in time tS”catch the down train for Wellington. The harbour steamers will run excursion trips all day to Seatonn and contiguous plaoeiS, to Day’s Bay, etc., while at the Lower Hutt the Bellevue Gardens, now a blaze of vernal magnificence, will he open all day to receive visitors.

In the evening there will bo ample amusement provided for holiday-makers at tho Opera House and the Theatre Royal, excellent companies appearing at each place.
