A NEW ZEALAND INVENTION. LONDON, November '6. The War Office has ordered two thousand pairs of patent pneumatic bootheels, the invention of Mr W. Liugard, of Wellington, New Zealand. [A company was formed in Wellington by Mr Lingard to take over the patent rights of this invention, and he went Home about a year ago to bring the pneumatic heel under the notice of the War Office.]
CANADIAN GRAIN TRADE. LONDON, November 6
Lord Strathcona, High Commissioner for Canada, states that grain was exported from the Dominion during the last financial year to the value of 49,215,000 dollars (about £9,850,000).
THE FRENCH MINING DISPUTE. PARIS, November 7. The award in the Pas do Calais miners’ dispute is against an increase of wages, which, under the Arras agreement, must follow the price of coal. (Received November 7, 10.59 p.m.) LONDON, November 7. Three additional arrests have been made in connection with the forging of Bank of England notes, making ten altogether. LONDON, November 6. Mr Chamberlain has appointed a committee to study the practicability of a gold standard currency being established in the Straits Settlement and the neighbouring Malay States. The principal main line companies propose to undertake tubing the metropolis. linking the various termini by means of primary circles, with cross tubes radiating to all populous centres. MELBOURNE, November 7. Lord Tennyson, Acting GovernorGeneral, is suffering slightly from appendicitis. (Received November 8, 1.14 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 7. Another 5000 tons of maize arrived from the Argentine to-day. Recent arrivals have caused a decidedly easier market. Argentine stocks are offering at 4s 6d to 5s 2d, but so far as is known there have been no sales. The Sierra, which arrived to-day from San Francisco via Auckland, made a fast passage from the latter port, taking three days and eight hours. She has been detained owing to coming from a plague port. 'HOBART, November 7. F. Corley, of Christchurch, New Zealand, lias won the third prize (£1125) in 'i'attersall’s No. 2 sweep.
