THE CARRIAGE OF SHEEP.
I ... PRESS ASSOCIATION. MASTtfIITON, November 4. Shoepfarmers In tiio Wairarapa > ars making serious complaints in regard to the number of sheep bruised in transit over the Rimutaka. The percentage has increased from barely one to nearly six, while the deaths have increased from one to three per cent. The Westinghouse brake is ascribed as the cause of • the trouble, the sudden pulling up, es-, pecially in mixed trains, resulting in serious damage. Soijio .400,000 sheep are annually railed to Wellington from - Wairarapa, and it is stated bn excellent authority that shoepfarmers seriously, contemplate driving in place of railing, unless the department adopts some measures to prevent the enormous percent- ■ age of bruised sheep now reported. It is estimated that every bruised sheep means a loss of 6s to the owner, ami in view of the largo number of sheep sent out of the district the loss to farmers would be about £SOOO a year. It _'3 suggested that wore the trains hot mixed; that is, if sheep were carried by themselves, the trouble would bo partially overcome.
