AA’ELLINGTON v. TARANAKI. PHESS ASSOCIATION. NEAV PLYMOUTH, August 14. The interprovincial football match AVellington v. Taranaki was played hero today before about two thousand people. The ground was in fair order, though slightly greasy as the result of light rain last night. Tho teams looked a fairly even lot as they went on the field, and .the play showed there was not a great deal between them. AVellington kicked off with the sun in their faces. Tho AVellington backs soon got on n good passing mn, Alclntyre kicking out. Mynott centred the play. Roberts and AA’alliice, and O’Uowda. Glenn and Glasgow started attacks for AVelliugton and Taranaki respectively, but to no advantage. After good work on both sides, llardgreaves and Glasgow carried the ball through tho visitors’ ranks, Glasgow scoring. Hardgreaves failed with the kick. 3—o Play for some time was uninteresting. A strong attack by the home forwards was nullified by Spencer kicking down the field, and AVellington assumed the aggressive, getting to Taranaki’s twenty-fives, where Taranaki was penalised for off-side. Spencer failed with an easy kick. "AVitbin a few minutes McIntyre broke away and heat the opposing backs, but met with hard luck, being carried into touch in goal. Taranaki was immediately penalised again for , taking the ball out of the scrum, and Spencer took another shot, but failed again with an easy kick. Give and take play followed for ii time. Then AVellington again attacked, and were awarded a free kick in a good position, AVallace making an unsuccessful kick at goal. Taranaki forwards started a rush, but AVallace Sent the ball down the field. Joyce and MoMinn next set off, beating the homo backs, but the ball went out near the Taranaki line. From the throw-in O’Dowda and Guy took play to AVellington territory, when Mclntyre got possession and made a fine run, fending off the three-quarters, but Hunter carried him out within a few yards of the goal line. For the rest of the spell the Taranaki forwards were mostly on the attack, one certain score being lost by passing forward. On resuming, Taranaki became aggressive, Johnson stopping a serious rush and Roberts another. For a Wellington man lying on the ball a free kick was given, O’Dowda landing a fine goal from halfway. 6—o. From a scramble AVellington made a dash, AVallace being collared on the line. A period of uninteresting play intervened, and then AVellington grafted their way up the field, ending in Slattery scoring. Speuced failed to increase the score. 6—3. Taranaki pressed Wellington hard for a time- Then tho visitors’ backs, with a fine passing run, transferred, play to the home territory, a pass forward spoiling a good chance. The southerners kept the home men penned down till a free kick relieved them - . O’Dowda started a dribbling rush, which ended in Spencer forcing. AVallace and Mclntyre made a dash, but George stopped them. Butler and Thomas started a dribbling rush, ending in Mclntyre forcing. . AVellington then made a final rally and carried play right under" tho posts, an almost sure thing being lost through Mclntyre throwing forward. A free kick cleared Taranaki’s line, and the game ended—Taranaki 6, AA’cllington 3. Air Tilley, of AVanganui, was referee.
Arrangements for to-morrow’s representative match between the Wellington and AVairarapa public schools are well forward, and the team is to arrive in charge of Mr A. Bums, of the Masterton School, by to-night’s mail train. 'Members of the Athletic Football Club and subscribers to the testimonial to Mr H. Kelly will meet at tho AA’estern Hotel at 8 o’clock to-morrow evening.
