MANAWATU RAILWAY.
TENTATIVE OFFER BY THE GOVERNMENT.
It is understood that a communication has been sent to the chairman of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company by the Government, making a tentative offer to purchase the railway on the basis of proposals made ty Mr Withered, the representative of the English shareholders, when he was in New Zealand.
The offer on this basis is equivalent to thirty shillings per share for the lino itself; but there arc other assets which the Government is agreeable to allow the company to retain and dispose of to its own advantage. The directors of the company are expected to take the offer into their favourable consideration immediately, so that the negotiations for the purchase of the line may reach finality more speedily than recent developments have led the public concerned to hope or anticipate. At any rate it appears that the directors and shareholders of the company, having been given a glimpse of the whip, have now been definitely shown the leading string. They can have their choice.
