FINANCE AND TRADE.

The Customs returns for yesterday amounted to £lslß 5s 9d. The following cablegram has been received by the Department of Agriculture from the Agent-General, dated London, 11th instant:—“The mutton market is very firm. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is oijd; Dunedin, Southland and W.M.E. Co. 3id; other North Island mutton, 3*d. The lamb market is quiet. Now Zealand lamb. Canterbury brand, old. Other New Zealand lamb, sd. .The beef market is excited, and very firm. Supplies of American chilled beef are small, and likely to decrease. Stocks of New Zealand hoof on hand are light. The average price to-day for hindquarters, New Zealand beef, 5Jd; fores, 4Jd. The markets for both butter and cheese are good. The price of butter to-day is 105 s; cheese, 545. The hemp market is steady. “ Good fair Wellington,” on spot, £37. April-Jmie shipment, £33 10s; stock, 377 tons against 3G2 last year. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet. Quotations nominal. New Zealand, 171 b standard, 42s to 455.” Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co., in conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams, report as to their Jolmsonville sale as follows:—An avenge yarding of some heavy-weight to medium bullocks, with a few lighter sorts, met a fair market. Beef made 20s; an occasional pen, 21s. We quote:—Prime heavy bullocks, £8 10s to £8; others, £7 17s 6d to £7 12s 6d : light bullocks, £7 7s 6d. Sheep were in usual supply, and were without improvement in price. A few medium fat ewes made 9s 9d, fat wethers 11s 9d, half-fatted store ewes 7s to 7s 3d ; butchers’ lambs, 8s lOd to 8s 7d; weaner pigs, 7s 3d.
