CRICKET.
MELBOURNE, March 7. At a farewell dinner by the Melbourne Cricket Club to the English and Australian teams of cricketers, life membership badges of the club were presented to nineteen members, and a purse of 20 sovereigns to each professional member of the English team. Mr A. C. MacLaren, captain of the English team, in responding, said that after losing the toss four times running the Australians had done remarkably well to win the test matches. He was quite satisfied with the play of his men. (Received March 8, 0.56 a.m.) MELBOURNE, March 7. Mr A. C. MacLaren, in acknowledging a handsomely-mounted portrait of himself presented by the trustees of the Melbourne cricket ground, said he was sorry his team had won only three out of the ten big matches played, but he ventured to gay that the team he would bring out next year would give a better account of themselves. The following have been selected to represent the Combined Team against the Midland Cricket Club to-day, in the game to be played when the senior championship matches ' are over:—S. Hickson, Weyboume, Richardson, Connell, Waters, Hickey, Blacklock (2), Niven, Staples, Sanderson. Ashbolt, Gore and Hales have intimated their inability to take part in the match.
