CITY COUNCIL.
The Wellington City Council met last night. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. G. W. Aitken), Councillors Nathan, Murdoch. Tolhurst, McLaren, Izard, Evans, Devine, Godbor, Luke, Smith, Barber and Winder. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The following recommendations of the Works Committee were adopted:—l. That the Hospital Trustees bo again mmmunicated with, asking them to nako more adequate pfovision than now exists for cases for infectious disease. That the Hospital Trustees bo requested to at once provide a proper ara-
hulance for the use of cases of infectious disease. 3. That Mr K. Herbert bo informed that, as Pcrcival street is a private street, the Council cannot bear tbo cost of repairing same; but that, if the frontagers to the street will undertake to pay such cost, the Council will put tho work in hand. -1. That Messrs Brandon, liislon and Johnston bo informed, in reply to their application, that tho Council will bo prepared to light Portland crescent upoji the cost of same being guaranteed, 5. That luo application of Mr P. McArdlo for the use of tho section next his promises, To Aro rclaimcd land, bo not granted. 0. That tho consent of the Council be given to a transfer of lease of Corporation land at foot of Taranaki street, A. Falknor to J. A. S. Reid. 7. fhat tho application of Mr T- on behalf of Messrs Kirkcaldio and Stains, for permission to thicken external walls ;at their promises, Brandon street, be granted, subject to snob walls being bonded to tho satisfaction of tho City Engineer. K. That tho City Solicitor bo Instructed to take all tho necessary proceedings to secure the removal of certain buildings adjacent to Plimmcrs steps, and erected in contravention of tho building by-laws. TOAVN HALL COMMITTEE. The following report of tho Town Hall 1 Committee was adopted;—l. That »he | Council now call for tenders for tho ■ erection of the Town Hall according to tho rilans and specifications prepared by tho architect. Mr J. Charleswortli, and as amended by him after consultation ■ with the City Engineer. 2. That advertisenients calling for tenders bo inj sorted in tbo newspapers in the four 1 principal cities of New Zealand. <3- : That a period of two months bo allowed 1 for receiving tenders, and that tho time for completion of the building bo t«o years. 4. That the main staircases bo so constructed as to render them fiionrnof. BATHS COMMITTEE. Tho following report of the Baths Committee was adopted: —1- That t.io City Engineer ho instructed to have t,io bottom of tho baths raked over, in order to secure the removal of stones and shells which are at present a source of inconvenience to bathers. 2. That the City Engineer he instructed to provide additional accommodation for drying towels and trunks at the baths, and also extra accommodation for storage or same. 3. That the baths bo. connected vk b the, Telephone Exchange. 4. That additional step:-; be erected at the ladies’ bath, iu order to secure greater safety for children. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. Tho following report of the Electric Light Committee was adopted;—l. That the application of Mr C. Fraser for a i lamp at Leraud street bo granted, the | lamp to be creeled at the corner o, | Leraud’ street and Russell terrace, That tho requests of Mr E. J. Soar!, asking that the polos in front of Ins hotel bo done away with, and that the lamp bo erected on a bracket from Dm hotel, bo not granted.
