PERSONAL.
Among the passengers from London, by the Paparoa last week were Professor'John H. Howell, 8.A., -ti. Sc., a ncl Mrs Howell. Professor Howell comes from the County School, Aberystwith, Wales, and has been appointed Science Master to the Auckland College aid Grammar School. The Professor hn also been connected with Craigmore College, Clifton, Strand school and King’s College, London. He was selected, out of a' largo niumber of applicants, by the Agent-General (Mr Reeves), and Professors Tilder and Walker, of London. The new Professor will take over his duties at an early date.
Among the passengers by the direct liner Gothic, which arrived in Wellington yesterday morning, was Mr A. H. Chapman, inventor of the dry thawing process, as applied to frozen meat- Mr Chapman has been to London in tho interests of his invention, s and has succeeded in having his process aaopted by a number of firms. It is "his intention to give a public demonstration of the working of the patent in Wellington, with, a view to disposing of certain crit-icism's-of. it that have been published here. As he found the London meat trade opposed to the process, on the ground that it tended to raise the price of frozen meat to tho wholesale purchaser, he is endeavouring td have the matter taken up by the Government, in tho interests of New Zealand producers.
