CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.
Special to the “Times.” AUCKLAND, October 5. Better weather prevailed for the golf championship meeting to day. The semi-finals for the championship were Slayed in the afternoon." Arthur Duncan ad an easy match with Hull (Poverty by si* U P “ n d four to play. 1 ’ .• ?; Co4lj * c * s: and Harry Gillies, both of. Auckland, played a close match: Cob beck got a hole ahead early in the game,.’ and he never let his-opponent get into the better position ■ till the thirteenth hole was reached, when Gillies stood cue u.o. Then ColbccJi played a succession of pretty warm, holes,' and” won by two, 1 UP. and one to play. The play was not brilliant in either match. Duncan had a few bad holes, but he played the home course steadily. He ought-to win fairlyeasily against Colbeck to morrow; though the latter is a steady player not easily put -off his game, and is likely to put his ' best foot foremost. In the forenoon there was a bogey foursome handicap. The brothers of Auckland, with', a handicap of one stroke, and the brothers Duncan, of Wellington, with a baa-", dicap of three strokes, tied for first plow., ’ each being one hole .up on bogey. Rig.; ginson and - Hod-eon (Wellington) came nest. They had a seven, and finished all square with the bogey score.' which wa s as follows:—Out—s, 5. 4 6. 4, 5, 6. 5. 4; in—t, 4. 4, 4. 5. fi. «. 4. 6, A handicap match against the same bogey score was played in. tha-afternooii.'-. Arthur Duncan : (scratch) and Pare Keiha Poverty Bay (handicap 4h tied for first - place, both being one down to bogey. ; Following are the best cards handed in:— '' A. Duncan (scratch), one down; Pare .. Keiha (handicap 4), one down; C. E. S. ’ Gillies (scratch), A. A. Scott, Otago (han. ■ dicap 7), K. Duncan ( (handicap 7); and J. B. Kyd. Auckland (handicap •). each twodown; E. Wilder. Christchurch (handicap 4). H. D. Stronach.-Otago (handicap 7). and J. Sykeg, Auckland (hand-cap 5), each 1 three down, -Golbeck, who plays with Arthur Duncan in -thel final for the championship to morrow, did not finish • his bogey card. -He hod a handicap of s three.; and- at the seventeenth -hole he stood one down- ■ Comparing the two cards. Duncan would have beaten him by two up. Both men, however conW show considerable improvement before being ok _ the top of their game.
