SWIMMING.
WELLINGTON AMATEUR CLUB. The annual meeting of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club-was held at the 'l’rocadero last evening. Dr Chappie president) in the chair. Ten new members were elected, including Mr Knibb. of the London Polytechnic Club, who recently arrived in Wellington. The annual report and halance_Bheot. which was read and adopted, on the motion of Dr Chappie, seconded by Mr T. Shields, stated that the past season had been a most successful one. The club races Were well contested. It: was regretted that the new baths, when finished, would not contain sufficient water at low tide to enable decent swimming to be obtained by the public and the holding of swimmiug races without having to wait for high water. There was also, a want of ac, commadation. An effort should be made by the club to have such serious obstacles removed at once. The report impressed upon members the advisability of com. mencing active training.as soon as possible. as the racing season would be opened in about a fortnight. The balance, sheet showed the club to be in a very good financial position, the cash balance being XI 11s 11a. The assets amount to £3 11s Ud, and the liabilities nib
Discussion took place with regard to the site chosen by the City Council for tho baths now being erected at To Aro,. Dr Chappie. Messrs T. Shields and G. 11,11 spoke in very disparaging terras as to the locality and the inefficiency of the bulbs. The following motion, proposed by Mr G. Hill and seconded by Mr O, Freyberg. wag carried:, —"That ■in consequence of the inadequate supply of water that will be found at low tide at the new Ta Aro-Baths, and of the want of accommodation thereat, the Wellington Centre of tbe New Zealand Amateur Swimming A ssociatjon be asked to organise a dopu- ; tatiou comprised of the swimmers of tho local clubs and others, and wait at once upon the City Council, to urge the extern. • nion of the western boundary of tho baths r more seaward a sufficient distance as will ; enable a depth of ten or twelve feet at least to be obtained at low tide, also, to ask for further dressing rooms and such other and necessary improvements, as in, i the op,ion .of the Centre is desirable in . ’ the interests of the citizens of WeL lington.” , '

It was decided to recommend the incoming committee to inquire into the* grant, made by" the Government for the teaching of swimming in our 1 public schools, atm also to confer with the computtees of the various clubs in the Wellington district with regard to taking action ,m the matter. ' It was announced that a combined sports meeting by the local clubs would be he'd shortly.. Votes of thanks were passed to the past season's officers.
