PEEgS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND June 28. The Tramways Compaiw has accepted th e tender of Messrs MoLean and Sons, at £17,433, for the construction of the first lin e of three and a quarter miles. The Council Engineer repotted that the work had not progressed as- provided in the deed of delegation. The City Council has received a claim for £4OO compensation from the father of William Smythe, who was killed at Nihotapu. Deceased was covered by an employers’ accident policy. A deputation from a citizens’ meeting yesterday met the Mayor and the chairman of the Fire Brigades Committee, and discussed the proposed improvements of the city fire appliances. Th© meeting was adjourned for three weeks pending a report from Superintendent Hugo, of Wellington. The German Government is having built under the supervision of Mr Krcnfield, of this city, an oil launch for the Island trade. The launch is to be propelled by an eighty-five horsepower Union oil-engine similar to those supplied to the Auckland Harbour Board’s launch Kuaka and the Government’s new schooner the Oountess of Ranfurly. At a meeting of the City Council last evening th© Finance Committee submitted the following recommendation in regard to a communication, from the Royal Reception Committee asking for the Council’s contribution to the expenses of the reception, “That a progress payment of £4OO be made, and detailed accounts submitted to th© Council before final payment is made.” This recommendation was adopted. DUNEDIN, Jun 6 28. At a meeting of the New Zealand Sheepbreeders’ Association the following addition to rule 7 was adopted, “That the New Zealand Sheepbreeders’ Council may at any time order the inspection of any fleck by tiro competent men, and should these inspectors consider such _ sheep net fairly representative of their kind, the COuttbil may expunge the said flock from the Flock Bock.” It was decided to have rules drafted by a solicitor with a view to registering the association. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Dairy Association, it was Unanimously resolved to congratulate Sir John McKenzie on the great honour conferred on him. Il Was also resolved to combine with the North Island Association with a view to talcing united action to procure a reduction in ocean freights. It was decided to take into consideration the matter Of regular shipments of butter. Mr KinSelltl, the Dairy Commissioner, drew attention to the unsatisfactory condition of a good deal cf cheese -Which arrived in Wellington coastwise for shipment. Consideration of the matter was postponed. It was resolved that the association approve tflte Government taking steps at once to inspect all dairies as suggested last year. It was decided to approach the Government With a view. to securing exemption of dairy factories and dairy people from the previsions Of the Workers’ Compensation for Accident* Act,

CHRISTCHURCH, June 28. « The bearing of the dispute in connection With the tanning, feUmongoting and skinning industry concluded before the Arbitration Court to-day. The curriers’ case will bo taken to-morrow morning, when the Court will also give its award in the dispute between the Typographical Association and the proprietors of country newspapers in Canterbury. The employers in th e tanners* and fellmougers* case maintain that the industry will not stand the strain of extra expenditure necessitated by granting the union’s demands.
