FOOTBALL.
Two matches of importance as regards the destination of the Senior Championship of the Rugby Union will be played this afternoon—Athletic v. Wellington and Poneke v. Melrose. There is a probability in the light of recent performances tha Athletic will defeat the hitherto invincible Wellington. As Poneke is likely to be represented against Melrose by the strongest team it has put in the field this season, a close game with the chances in favonr of Poneke should result. The lastnamed match will be played at Petone, and the game between Wellington and Athletic will be played on No, 1 ground of the Athletic Park. On the adjoining ground Old Boys will meet Oriental. The "boys" have of late been playing a much-improv-ed game, and there seems to be a chance that to-day they will stem the tide of defeat that has met them every Saturday of the present Reason,
