THE SIXTH CONTINGENT

Including the Canterbury special section of 25 men, I there were 440 on the muster roll in camp yesterday morning, with about twenty of the Federal Contingent still tohome in. The contingent is to con. sist of 451 men, apportioned as'follows: No. IT Company (Wellington), 105; No. 18 Company (Wellington, Nelson, West Coast and Marlborough), 105; No. 19 Company (Canterbury), 105; No. 20 Company (Otago), 105; .medical officers, three; contingent oficers, three; Rough Riders (Canterbury Special Contingent), 25. All told there are about.47o men to chose from, so that them are still a number of men to go out of camp. ; Colonel Penton reviewed the Sixth Contingent in. detail at the camp yesterday afternoon. , He expressed himself satisfied with the class of men who had been chosen and gratified at the quality of the majority of the horses which had come forward. There are a number of applicants for the remaining vacancy -in the list of officers. The form of oath taken by the members of the Sixth declares that the volunteers will faithfully serve in the volunteer force of -New Zealand loth within and withoht the colony until they shall be lawfully discharged. ’ , The .City Band will give a performance in camp this evening. The Garrison Band will play at Newtown Park on Sunday. Messrs Craig and Taylor have arranged to give a limelight exhibition of South African views at Newtown Park this evening. A collection will be taken up in aid 'of the send-off fund. ■ ' It will be seen on reference to the telegrams published in our shipping/ column that: the troopship Cornwall, which is to convey ' the; Sixth Contingent to South Africa, sailed from Sydney fork Wellington yesterday. The vessel may be expected to arrive on Monday. . , ; PIIESS ASSOCIATION.' ’• AUCKLAND, January 17. Lieut.-Colonel Banks left for Wellington to-day by the Mapourika to take over command of the. Sixth Contingent. '• At ameeting of the Sixth Contingent Refreshment Committee to-day the question of supnlying alcoholic liquors at the sendoff entertainment was again considered, the committee deciding in favour of liquor being provided.' This will be a recommendation to the General Committee.
