PALMERSTON NORTH.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) It is announced that the now public library will bo > opened to the public on -Wednesday, Obh September; A little ceremony - will bo given on the occasion.- The Mayor and councillors will indulge in some speech-making. At the last meeting of the Borough Council Councillor Edwards handed the Mayor a cheque for £lO as a donation towards: the purchase of bookt, and since then Councillor Guy has presented £lO :10s. for the same purpose. The thanks of the public are duo to these gentlemen for their generous gifts, and the hope is expressed that similarly liberal support will be forthcoming. It is suggested that, a ball should be arranged to assist in raising funds. Mr Hugli, formerly a resident of Palmerston, before lie left for Europe donated a valuable clock to the Indian Famine Fund. At the last meeting of, the Council it was decided to purchase the clock for £lO and place it in-the public library, ; The late fatal accident oh the raiF way line has drawn attention to the necessity for fencing in the line where it runs through the borough. At-pro-sent it runs from the station down Main-street in the middle -of the read ■for over a mile, and -the ,same evil exists on the line before it reaches the station. The wonder is that there have not been more accidents. To remedy this state of affairs the Government is to be asked to fence-in the line'. At the last meeting of the Borough Council '-the Mayor nad again to present a certificate from the Royal Humane Society. It is scarcely a (month since ho last, performed,a similar (duty. On this occasion the recipient of the certificate was Mr Bert Osgood, and the circumstances relating to it have been published. On receiving the certificate Mr Osgood expressed his hearty thanks for the honour. ' ! One of the most successful social gatherings held this season was that of the Bowling Club, which was held in the Theatre Royal on Wednesday evening. , The stage and adjuncts of fhe (theatre had been,.so changed .by the (decorations that the place was hardly recognisable. All ;round the waffs had been covered with ferns, flowers. ;cvcrgrccns, flags and mirrors, while the stage had been furnished as a" drawingroom . and the vestibule converted into a comfortable lounge. The arrangements were in every respect complete, and did credit to‘the committee appoint erl to carry them out. About seventy-five couples took part in • the dancing. After (lie opening the profiiui'nt of the club (Mr Leopold - Simmons) made-a felicitous speech, in whichlie complimented the ladies on the active- interest they took ' in: everything pertaining to; bowling. A capital supper was provided at the back of the stage. ' Songs were, .contributed by several, ladies ami gentlemen. At an interval prizes were presented to those who won them last year.
