THE “BOXERS” TARIFF PROPOSALS.
The letter from the-Boxers''to the' Premier on the subject of’the proposed alterations in the tariff was as follows : “We, tbo undersigned members of the House of Representatives',' hereby respectfully bog to urge upon the Government the necessity, -in the-interests-of our colonial industries, of reconsidering the tariff- proposals brought down with the' Financial Statement; Wo main-' tain ’ that it should ~always" be j the aim and object of the Government to foster industries which, benefit the wage-earn-ing classes and tend , to. promote the material welfare- -of. tho - ■ colony ■ as -awhole, and no fiscal readjustment which will prejudicially affect industrial enterprise should be ' made'. . With" The .object, therefore, of affirming ~.sound, economic;, principles and safeguarding the best interests of tho community, wo advocate thev following:—(1) Tha,t the duty-on candles, matches, coffee,’ 1 cocoa, machinery and patent and proprietary 'medicines remain’ as at present. (2) That currants and raisins be admitted duty free. (3) That the proposals of the Government respecting tea, kerosene, rice and drugs be agreed to. As a result of our proposed, amendments, the amount remitted will ie £14,000 less .than the Government iswilling to concede, and we leave to ■your discretion the selection of articles upon which taxation to the’ above’. ;amdunt may bo remitted," so. as to most equitably relieve the burdens ol the people.” i JOTTINGS.
