'[ c.c Speaker took the chair at 3.5 n.m. DECEASED MEMBERS. After the transaction of formal business. The PREMIER (Hon R. J. Seddon) moved, “That this House desires to place on record its high sense of the services renuered to the colony by the late John Joyce (Lyttelton), H. A. Field (Otaki) and VV. Crowther (Auckland!. and respectfully tenders to i heir families the assurance of its sir-cere sympathy wn.. them in, their irreparable loss. They could, he went; on to say, ill spare men like the late, Air Joyce, and ho was sure his services would ever bo respected, aiid his memory kept green hv those who-knew; him. The late Mr'Field waS one” of New Zealand’s sons, and there was no doubt of the value of the services he had rendered to the country of his birth. They deeply
regretted his death at so early an age. and felt that by it the country had sustained a severe loss. As to the lute -Mr Crowd her. there was a rugged honesty: of character and purpose about him that all inspected, and there were lew v 1 1 0 would ho more missed than. lie. Captain RUSSELL (Hawke’s Bay), in •cconding the resolution, said the three gentlemen who had passed away really jnjoyod the universal confidence of members of the Home; they were men without enemies, and to pass away, as they did, in the very hour ol struggle, in their desire once moie to bo allowed to serve their country, was, he thought, most pathetic. To pass away at the very moment when exhilarated by gratification at their success, was indeed a most sorrowful thing. The resolution was tarried unanimously, and, on the motion of the Chairman, the House then (3.45 p.m.) adjourncc until 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
