Tlio Duke- of ' Devonshire, in the course of a speech while presiding at a meeting of like- Women’s Unionist Association, said the Government dirt not intend that s ho Boers should by political intrigues: obtain in future what they had lost by force of arms. The Hon. J. Chamberlain, who also spoke, dcralarcd that any attempt to confer improper freedom upon the Boers would «he. silenced ’ by the overwhelming opinion to the contrary. , The : settlement, ho proceeded to remark, must bo final, and no seeds, of mischief, ■must be- left.
