PRESS ASSOCIATION, ’NAPIER, .Tune 20a The charge of wife murder against Ropata Paraire occupied the Supreme Court for two days, ending in a verdict of manslaughter, in-which the Chief Justice ex- ' pressed his concurrence, but deferred sentence. The most remarkable feature of the evidence was the widespread belief in witchcraft manifested by educated natives. Eopata. was educated at Te Ante College; His wife, to w-hom he w-as married (Maori fashion), left hini. He followed dier and tried every: means to induce her to return, including spells prescribed by a tohunga. He believed she Was in love-with another j Maori, and, according to his ow-n evidence, ■’ she told him not to bother her any more, . as she w;as going to. join the other man at Wairoa, and in a.’fit of passion he pickedup an axe and struck her. , ~
