THE DISABLED WAIKATO
PICKED UP. BY A STEAMER. BOUND FOR FREMANTLE. BRISBANE, Thursday. Captain Wood, of the barque Banca reports that bis vessel stayed for some time within speaking distance of the Waikato.■■ Captain Weston asked that the Waikato be takeiVin tow, but was informed that that was impossible. Nobing was said about provisions or coal, and Captain Wood concluded, tbercforq, that these were not required. The disabled vessel was making poor headway under a certain amount of canvas. She did not seem to be deeply loaded, and apparently some of her cargo bad been jettisoned. ■■ Shortly after the vessels parted company the wind veered to the South. This would enable the Waikato to make headway m a northerly direction. Three days afterwards, however, the wind again veered to the north. The Waikato’s position when spoken was 1080 miles S.S.E. of the extreme southern end of Madagascar. (Received October 5, 6114 p.m.) ' ■ MELBOURNE, Thursday. The Capo Nelson 'signal station'has telegraphed that the steamer Ujina has reported that on her voyage from Mauritius to Newcastle, she passed the steamer Asloun with the disabled steamer W’ai- • ka.to in tow and that the Asloun expected to reach Fremantle, Western Australia, with her charge on Abe 7th instant, [According to Sydney shipping lists the British-India steamer Ujina is bound from Calcutta to Melbourne and Newcastle. The Asloun, which is a vessel of 2828 tons, commanded by Captain Steele, left London on the sth August for Sydney via Western Australian ports. Cape' Nelson is the central arid southern extremity of Portland Peninsula, Victoria.]
