PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHARGE OP SUNDAY TRADING. WOODVILLE, Thursday. Daniel Blarney Tattershall, licensee of the Kumeroa -Hotel, was fined 4l’ s ■ with costs £4 13s, on a charge of Sunday tra’ding, and 40s, with costs 7s, on a charge of keeping his premises open on Sunday. All the witnesses for the prosecution, with one exception, swore that they did not- purchase drink. The Magistrate (Mr Northcroft) held that' no drink need nave been sold to constitute an offence. The landlord did not treat the men as guests, but entertained them for the purpose of keeping his business together. A RECEIPT DISCREDITED. WOODVILLE,- Thursday. ' At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, in the case of Mills v. Wicks, the plaintiff alleged that defendant owed him £lO6 on a land transaction. Defendant swore that be held a- bona- fide receipt for the full amount. -After a protracted hearing, judgment was given for the plaintiff, Mr Northcroft, S.M., holding that the receipt was not genuine. His Worship said he considered that a prosecution should; be instituted for the fabrication of evidence. RAKAJA RAILWAY ACCIDENT. CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. Airs Ashworth has been awarded £IOOO damages for injuries received in the Rakaia railway accident. Her husband received £SOO on-account of expenses incurred during her illness. The case of Mr Pepper, who claimed £I2OO, has been settled out of Court- for £7OO. Three more cases are to be heard. GENERAL ELECTION. AUCKLAND, Thursday. Air Robert French addressed a meeting of city electors to-night. Ho-said he tvaa in favour of an elective Executive,! the 'referendum, and the Swiss system of judicature. He thought that the ’ Cabinet, dominated Parliament, and that the Premier dominated the Cabinet. ' ■ ' ‘ DASHED TO DEATH. , DUNEDIN, Thursday. A terrible accident occurred this afternoon on the road from Arrowtown to Macetown. Mrs R. Hood and her.grandchild (a' baby) were returning to Macctown> in a buggy when the horse slued, and the buggy went over a nrecipico 000 ft high, in to the Arrow- river. The driver jumped out and escaped, but Imth Airs Hood and the baby were dashed to death. MAIL SERVICE COMPLAINT. DUNEDIN, imusday. The committee of the Chamber of Commerce has decided - to bring under the notice of the PostmasterGeneral the extraordinary disadvantages in connectionwith the San - Fraiicrico mail service -under which Dunedin labours, and .which have caused much irritation. , A table of arrivals and departures during tire current year is enclosed. The table shows that, despite the two days’ later despatch commented in Marcn last, the departure in six instances look place just prior to the arrival of the incoming mail. /In the remaining four months' tho inward mail arrived by tram at 9 o’clock in the evening of one day, while the outward mail closed at 10 o’clock the next morning, leaving thin only for bare acknowledgments, the transaction of business being out of, ■he question. • The Chamber asks for further delay of the outgoing mail or some oth w convenient method of remedying the inconveniences now suffered.
