There is great, excitement throughout tho United States over the rave between, iho yachts Shamrock arid Columbia for the America Cup. Tho crowding of visitors into New York is unprecedented. The weather to-day is liiAy. (Received October 5. a.ni.) NEW YORK, Wednesday. In the first* race the .iiirty miles course was not covered witV’u five and a-lialf hours, and the race will be icsa ilcil. Tho wind varied in force fmur twelve to eight knots, and ultimately foil to a calm when the yachts were three miles from home. Shamrock, which received six and throe-tenths seconds, led a. 1 the outset, but the Columbia overhauled her, and trussed the stake boat first. By superior handling, however, Snamrock was afterwards again in the leading position. Sir Thomas Lipton, the ovucr of tho challenger, is hopeful of success. Shamrock’s light wont her •.•.utilities surprised everyone.
