OLD AGE PENSIONS.
THE VICTORIAN BILL. . MELBOURNE. Wednesday. The second reading of the Old Age Pensions Bill was moved by the Premier in the Legislative Assembly last night. Sir George Turner estimated that about 10,000 persons would have to be provided with pensions, and that abou'. £150,000 a year , would be required. He proposed to raise the necessary' funds by reducing the income tax exemptions from £2OO to £IOO, abolishing the exemptions on incomes over £SOO and (lowering the probate duties exemption to £IOOO. These changes, would r-v alise about £90,000. The balance would bo provided out of the general revenue. The Premier was warmly commended for his scheme, which was well received by the House. The Bill was read 1 a second! time by 54 votes to 28, and passed its remaining stages amid cheers.
