PREDICTION BY MR BARTON. SYDNEY. Tuesday. In a speech on the federation question, tho Hon E. Barton, senior member of the New South Wales delegation to the Federal Conference, predicted that Now Zealand and Western Australia would yet join tho union. INVERCARGILL, Tuesday;
A meeting convened by Mayor Stead to consider the question of the federation of this colony with the Australian Commonwealth was hold to-night in the Theatre. The attendance was only moderate. The Mayor presided, and the speakers ware Messrs J. El Watson (Tothill, Watson and Co.). J. Hanan and J. J. Wesney (aspirants for Parliament). Mr Thomas Buxton spoke against- the proposal. It was resolved, “That ;n the opinion of this meeting the time has arrived when the attention of the people and of the Parliament of New Zealand should be earnestly directed to the great question of federation.” A motion to adjourn the meeting for'further discussion was negatived.
