IMPERIAL FINANCE.
- A CONSIDERABLE DEFICIT. INCREASE IN TAXATION PROPOSED. London, Monday. The expected deficit of four millions in the British finances is the subject of a good deal of public discussion. Sir Edward Grey, who was Parliamentary Secretary for‘Foreign Affairs in the last two Liberal Governments, delivered a speech at Oxford, in which he advocated the imposing of a tax on ground values.
The “ Times,” in a leading article, urges the extension of indirect taxation including a duty of Is per quarter on corn and a halfpenny per lb on sugar. The latter, the “ Times " believes, would yield six millions sterling yearly. ■
