THE POLICE FORCE.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR RECRUITS. New regulations respecting the police force are published in this weeks “Gazette.” The police force will be divided into tho following grades: Commissioner, inspectors, sub-inspec-tors, sorgeants-major, sergeants and constables. Vacancies in the force will be filled from candidates selected by tho Commissioner of Police, subject to tho approval of the Minister haying tho control of tho department for tho time being. Tho candidates selected must bo able to read, write and spell, and to work sums in simple addition and subtraction. They must bo of unexceptionable moral character, of which satisfactory testimonials will bo required. They must possess activity, intelligence and good temper. They must not bo less than 21 ’and not more than 80 years of ago, but this age-limit is not to apply to members of the 1 ermanent Militia who joined that force before tho date of these regulations on tho understanding that if found suitable they would be eligible for enrolment in the police force up to 40 years of ago They must not bo under oft 9in in height, of good physique and of a normal chest measurement oi not less than 38in; of good health, tree from any bodily complaint, of sound constitution, and successfully vaccinated. Candidates, before appointment to the probationary class, will have to undergo a medical examination. If selected they will bo drafted to a training depot in Wellington as probationers, and before being appointed police constables will have to undergo a further departmental examination. Should it be found that they lack the necessary qualifications, they will be discharged from tho depot without .being appointed. Men who have previously served in tho Now Zealand or any other police force may, at tho discretion of tho Commissioner, be exempted from tho depot training. Sergeants and constables will be allowed twelve days’ leave of absence annually on full pay, and above that time no pay will bo given. This leave will bo allowed to accumulate up to 36 days, but it must not exceed that period except under special circumstances, to bo decided by tho Commissioner.
