Tho Von Archdeacon Tow-rood, of St. Stephen’s, Marten, leaves next week on an extended bo iday. Tho Governor has intimated that ha will be unable to visit tho Hawera Agricultural and Pastoral Snow owing to the lateness of the session.
Mr and Mrs Alex. Boyie and the Misses Julius, who are expected to arrive from Christchurch to day, will stay at Government House for a week. Mr J. A. X. Raidla, the manager of tho Dunedin branch of the Dresden Piano Company, who has been in Wellington a tew days, left for the West Coast of the South Island yesterday. Mr G. G. Haldane, ot the Eastown railway workshops, has been transferred to Petone. His fellow-employees entertained Mr Haldane at a “ sooial ” a few nights ago, when he was the recipient of a presentation. Mr Donald Grant has been asked to contest the next Mayoral election at Palmerston, bat has decided not t> do so. Ha has, however, resolved to oorae forward foe public honours in another capacity, and will contest the Palmerston seat against all-comers at the next election.
Mr Walter Pock, Uto chief engineer of the Waitara Freezing Works and ths holder of an extra chief engineer’s certificate, has been appointed to take charge of the linotype machines in connection with the * 4 New Zealand Times. n Mr J. Hampton, formerly chief engineer of the Hula, joins the stiff of our evening contemporary in a fdmilar capacity. News was received yosterdiy of the death of the Hon Joseph Shephard, M.L.C. The ton gentleman, who was appointed to the Upper House in 1885, was very advanced in years, and for some time had bean too infirm to attend to his Parliamentary duties. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, the Legislative Council adjourned in the afternoon immediately after the Minister of Education announced what had occurred.
