Haldane, ot the Eastown railway workshops, has been transferred to Petone. His fellow-employees entertained Mr Haldane at a “ sooial ” a few nights ago, when he was the recipient of a presentation. Mr Donald Grant has been asked to contest the next Mayoral election at Palmerston, bat has decided not t> do so. Ha has, however, resolved to oorae forward foe public honours in another capacity, and will contest the Palmerston seat against all-comers at the next election.

As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased, the Legislative Council adjourned in the afternoon immediately after the Minister of Education announced what had occurred.
