The Hauplrl steamed up to Petono yesterday morning tfUd discharged 201 tons of coal for the Gear Meat Company, returning to the Queen's Wharf late la the afternoon. On the way down she ’ ranged alongside the Arawata in the stream and shipped a winch, which was put ashore here. The Haupiri leaves for Pictou, Nelson and the West Coast at noon to»day. The chief officer, Ur Hoi* ford, is remaining behind this trip, Mr Bonnor (late of the Orowaiti) assuming his duties. The barque Coromandel is now almost on an oven keel, and by the appearance of things the time is not very far distant when she will he once more afloat. A watertight bulwark has been built along the starboard side, what slope there is being from port to starboard, and at low tide there la now about two feet of original and temporary bulwark all round, while the poop deck aft and the forward deck-house are high out of water. The centrifugal pump that was being used during the operations when the vessel cantedover to the awkward position ehe has been in tor the past two years has been sub* merged daring the whole of that period, and will be used in conjunction with others to pump the water out when the time arrives. Yoang, late 6Mhe Poheras. who has been studing navigation at “ Devonia,” Lyttelton, has passed bis examination for a chief officer’s certificate. . , „ Nows from Auckland states that while the mail steamer Alameda was going up the harbour she collided with the ketch Huon Belle near the railway wharf. The mail steamer was under the control of Pilot Saioty. The engines had been stopped some time before the accident occurred, and the steamer was moving at the rate of about two knots per hour. The Huon Belle was wearing out of Mechanics* Bay into the Quay street breastwork, and was struck on the starboard quarter, with the result that the bulwarks were smashed, the top sides and stringers splintered and the topmast broken short off. The vessel was not making any water, and was towed to the wharf. The Collector of Customs will make au investigation into Che o-uiso of the accident. The Waihora, from Sydney via Auckland and the East Coast, brought 133 tons cargo (including 2U cases fruit) for Wellington, and hod 240 tons for through ports. Mr D. Scott, late of the Waikare, is now acting as second officer in place of Mr Hutchings, who relinquished his duties temporarily owing to family bereavement. The Mana is engaged making a trip between Patea and Westport for a load of coal for the former port, and is not to leave Wellington again for Patea until Monday next. The hulk Jenn Pierre is at present on the bard fcetween the Ferry and Wool Wharves, where her ♦copper sheeting its being repaired. Messrs Johnston and Co. have been advised that 4he bajque Akaioa and the ship Oamaru left Liverpool for Wellington on JunoX7th and August 3rd The barquontine Menja and the barque Statscolnister Sclmer, both bound to Kaipara, were towed to sea by the Duco yesterday. Out of 811 tons of coal taken in at Westport by tho Corinna 201 tons were discharged here yesterday, the balance being for Lyttelton, Tlmaru and Dunedin. WRECK OF THE 5.3. GERTIE. News has been received that the steamer Gertie, recently purchased by Messrs Horsley and Co., of Wanganui, for the coal trade, has been wrecked sear Albany, Western Australia, while on her way from Port Natal (Mouth Africa) to Newcastle, where she was to ship a load of coal for Wanganui. Mr Horsley was on board at the time, but, as far as is known, all hands were saved. The Gertie was a twimsorew steamer of 269 gross and 100 tons net, and was built by Messrs AUsupp and Sons. Preston, la 1891. Her dimensions are— Length, 130 ft Sin; breadth, 22ft; depth, Bft wn. The engines were on the triple expansion principle, the diameters of the cylinders being 9in, 16in and 241 n, with a stroke of 181 n, and were 69 Indicated horse-power. It is not yet known the amount the steamer was insured for, but she Is almost certain to be w.eu covered considering the long ocean voyage the little vessel bad to make before reaching her destination.
