TEMPERANCE CONVENTION.
By Telsyraph.— Press Association, Palmerston North, May 24. The Temperance Convention was opened to-day. It is attended by 243 delegates (aa against 160 last year) from Wellington* Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki provincial districts.
Sir E. Stout presided. A memorial resolution was passed, including the names of Mr Gladstone, Neal Dow, Bra Lees and Richardson, Miss Willard and Mr J. H. Raper. The following resolution was passed “ That the New Zealand Alliance oppose the granting of a license at Maugaweka.” A legal defence fund was formed. The following comprise the now Executive : --r-Wellington city, Messrs Atkinson, Fraser and Thompson; Suburbs, Mr King; Wairarapa, Eev Murray; Maaterton, Rev W, Woo 3 * Otaki, Rev Bellhonse; Palmerston, Mr Stubbs; Eangitikei, Mr Shearer: Manawatu, Rev Doull; Wanganui, Mr‘Carson; Patea, Mr Crawford; Hawera, Mr Robbins ; Egmont, Mr Harkness; New Plymouth, Mr White; Waiapn, Mr Lambert; Napier, Kav Buller ? Hawke’s Bay, Eev Morrison; Waxpawa. R 67 Wills ; Pabiatna, Bev Ecolea. Papers were read on “ Brink and Crime, by Sir E. Stout; “ Drink and Labour,’ Mr Hutcheson; "Drink and Pauperism, Mr pnblio meeting was held last night and addressed by the representatives of all churches. -
