THE LATE MR GLADSTONE.

President Kruger, in a cable message of sympathy with Mr Gladstone’s family, says that Mr Gladstone’s services to the Transvaal will never be forgotten. MEMORIAL SERVICES. A STATESMAN “ WHO MADE THE CENTDEY.” Received May 21, 1 a.m. London, May 23. At a memorial service at St. Paul’s the Archbishop of Canterbury said Mr Gladstone had raised political life to the highest level.

The Rev Dr Albert Basil Orme Wilberforco (Canon of Westminster) referred to Mr Gladstone as a statesman who had made the century.

On Sunday memorial services were held in all tho churches, and were attended by large congregations. At Ha warden Mr Gladstone's favourite hymns ware sung. During the singing of “Tho Rock of Ages” Mrs Gladstone occupied the seat formerly her husband’s. The Very Rev Dr Edward Charles Wickham, Dean of Lincoln, and son-in-law of Mr Gladstone, made touching allusions to the deceased, referring to tho widespread affection rarely inspired by a public man. Mr Gladstone’s .body lies in state at Hawarden till Wednesday. Then it will be brought to Westminster Hall, where it is expected it will lie in state till Thursday or Friday. Tne funeral will take place on Saturday.

By Telegraph —‘Press Association, Napier, May 23. Reference to the death of Mr Gladstone was made in the Cathedral and many of the other churches last night. Auckland, May 23. At a representative meeting of citizens it was decided to hold a public meeting to testify honour and respect to Mr Gladstone. Sir M. O’Rorke will deliver an oration, and the question of erecting a permanent memorial will also be considered,
