CRICKET.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Beyond all question other ancient zealots besides myself, as well as the “ colts” read yonr exceedingly interesting leaderette in yesterday's Times with consummate relish. In point of science, football cannot be compared with its compeer cricket in any of our good old British pastimes, and as you truly say, “ The fact that cricket does not now hold pride of place as the ‘ best game in the field’ is largely owing to the attitude of the schools.” Moreover, importers of material would find it greatly to their disadvantage should the exhilarating game go by the board through lack of interest and “ devotion of a few enthusiasts,” and a boy’s character, or man’s for that matter, is easily judged on the cricket field, for anything mean, selfish and despicable in him readily betrays itself. What is supremely wanted are good, efficient, all-round coaches, up-to-date in science, and a suitable ground and appurtenances, belonging entirely to the Association. That’s the tip ! —I am, io.. Ad Rem. January 11, 1898.
