THE AUCKLAND SENSATION.

DR OEPEN TO BE EXTRADITED.

By Telegraph Association . Auckland, January 6,

The question of taking steps to secure the arrest of Dr Orpen in connection with the death of Susan McCallum has beep under consideration of the Minister of Justice, the Hon T. Thompson, who has consulted with the Premier and Police Commissioner Tunbridge on the subject, with the result that an application for his extradition will be made through tho Imperial Government to the United States, in case ha should arrive in San Francisco by the Alameda. Although the coroner's jury returned- ft verdict of manslaughter only, a warrant for has been issued, the offence with which Dr Orpen is accused coming, it is contended, within the definition of that crime in the Criminal Coda Act. It is understood a question-was raised by the Commissioner as to whether there was any probability of a charge of murder being sustained even if Dr Orpen’s extradition were obtained. Jt was also pointed out that whan the New South Wales Government extradited Bftt}er the cost was £BOOO. The Premier and Ministep of justice, however, were of opinion that no question of cost should interfere in the administration of justice, and that the extradition should be applied for in the ordinary way. Theps js, of course, a probability that the accused wiji either leave the Alameda at Samoa or Honolulu, in which event the present proceedings will have no effect.
